Cornelius Ryan - W.W.II Medals and Badges (June 5, 1920-Nov. 23, 1974). Was an Irish journalist and author mainly known for his writings on popular military history, especially W.W.II. His two best known books are The Longest Day (1959), which tells the story of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, and A Bridge Too Far (1974), which tells the story of Operation Market Garden, the ill-fated assault by airborne forces on the Netherlands culminating in the battle of Arnhem. Both books were made into major motion pictures, in 1962 and 1977, respectively.

Offered here are Ryan's personal military campaign medals and stars, clasps and medals, insignias, ribbons and his war correspondent's patches, etc. Also included is a Zippo lighter presented by Commander U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Also included is his 1939-45 Star for Battle of Britain, his Pacific Star for Burma, France & Germany Star and War Medal 1939-45 Oak leaf. Lot of 45 items.

Gavin, James M (1907-1990) Commanding Officer of the 82nd Airborne Division that jumped in Normandy on D-Day, 1944; known as the "Jumping General"; he was the youngest U.S. General in World War II; he served as U.S. minister to France after his retirement from the military. Halsey, William F. "Bull" (1882-1959) Five-Star Fleet Admiral, one of only five men to have held that rank. He commanded the South Pacific Area in 1942 and was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Third Fleet in 1944. The Japanese surrender took place on his flagship, the battleship USS Missouri, in Tokyo Bay. PS ("W.F. Halsey") in blue ink, 8" x 10", n.p., n.d. Very Fine.

King, Ernest J. & Harold R. Stark - Admirals, U.S. Navy. King (1878-1956) was Commander in Chief, United States Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations (COMINCH-CNO) during World War II. PS signed as Fleet Admiral, U. S. Navy and dated "September - 1945," 10" x 8". King was the second admiral to be promoted to five-star rank. Stark (1880-1972) was King's predecessor as CNO; he oversaw the build-up of the U.S. Navy and its participation in the Normandy invasion. PS ("HR Stark - Admiral US Navy"), n.p., n.d. Both very fine. MacArthur, Douglas (1880-1964) U.S. general who commanded the Southwest Pacific Theatre in World War II, administered postwar Japan during the Allied occupation, and led United Nations forces during the first nine months of the Korean War. Oversize photograph signed and inscribed "To Myra Grace. With the affectionate regard of Douglas MacArthur," signed in black ink on his right shoulder, on 18" x 14¾" card stock (image is 15¾" x 12½"), no place, no date. A distinguished head-and-shoulders portrait in uniform. Fine; one scratch on MacArthur's left cheek, minor toning on the light uniform, and a few minor blemishes to background and mount. A spectacular photograph, ready for framing and display.

Ridgway, Matthew B (1895-1993) U.S. General; he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II; during the Korean War, he took command of the 8th U.S. Army and turned its morale around. In 1952, Ridgway replaced General Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. IPS ("M.B. Ridgway") to Douglas C. Platt, dated "9 Aug 69", 10" x 8", in uniform with a grenade visible. With ALS to Platt, dated July 15, 1969, from Connecticut, regarding sending the photo. Transmittal envelope is signed "Gen. M.B. Wainwright, Jonathan M (1883-1953) General commanding U.S. Army Forces in the Philippine. Forced to surrender in May 1942, he was a prisoner of war for the rest of the war. Medal of Honor winner for his defense of Bataan and Corregidor, which delayed the Japanese takeover. The brutality of the ensuing Bataan Death March is legend. PS ("J M Wainwright General USA") in blue ink, 10" x 8", n.p.n.d. Very fine.

(U.S.S. Pueblo Memorabilia) Captain Pete Bucher. Memorabilia from the commander of the USS Pueblo, which was attacked on January 23, 1968 by North Korean naval vessels and MiG jets. One man was killed and 82 crew members were captured and held prisoner for 11 months. Items include: a copy of Bucher: My Story (New York: Doubleday & Co., 1970) inscribed and signed, "For Dorothy McLeventy, with warmest regards, L.B. Cdr. USN"; with a "USS Pueblo / Ager-2" patch, two different pieces of stationery from the Pueblo, a 1999 check signed by Bucher, and a white (soiled) dress shirt embroidered "L.M. "Pete" B" on one cuff. (6 items).
